The advent of video games and other time consuming entities has taken the place of many popular childhood games in Nigeria. We failed to pass down the knowledge of these games to our children, and naturally, they are fading away from our lives.
Some of these games were region specific while others were common to a remote community, For our throwback today, we will be highlighting 5 legendary games that resounded their names in literally every Nigerian state.
1. Skipping (Lasta-Lasta): This the most popular childhood game in Nigeria. This childhood master-thriller sprung up the creative instincts of many Nigerian children, as some kids turned almost any flexible thing into a rope in-order to successfully play this game. The theme song of this thrilling game can never leave the mind of any child of the 90’s.
2. Catcher (Police and Thief): It is easier to see a unicorn on the streets than to see a Nigerian boy that never played this game. It never got stale. It never stopped bringing joy to our hearts, despite the numerous times we sustained injuries while playing it, we always looked forward to our full recovery, so as to feature with our friends in this Nigerian blockbuster.
3. Suwe: There are not many games that featured in the unisex category, but Suwe blended into this role without losing a pint of its joy. It was a national source of joy to millions of Nigerian children. With just a series of well charted lines and a good spot in the sand, the stage was set to rock this game till your mama calls.
4. I Call On…: This is one of the most creative games in the history of Nigeria. It sparked the creative, calculative and cognitive skills of all participants. It also required a reliable speed burst that can challenge Bolt at an Olympic stage when players heard the name of the called participant.
5: Ten-Ten: This game brought out the acrobatic skills of of every Nigerian child. It was a mystery to guys and a joy to girls.
