#ThrowbackThursday: 4 Times Super Eagles Embarrassed Nigeria At An International Stage

The Super Eagles’ disappointing 2-0 loss last weekend reminded all Nigerians of some painful moments where our football hopes were dashed by the shambolic performance of the Nigerian senior team.

The heart breaking loss to Croatia dampened the heart of Nigerians all over the world. It also reminded many Nigerians of the true reason why some of us tend to shy away from watching the Super Eagles matches.
Over the years, the Super Eagles have truly humiliated the “Giant of Africa” title that used to accompany them at several international stages. Some embarrassing scenarios like these include:

1. Ghana 7-0 Nigeria (1955): This embarrassing scoreline is Nigeria’s biggest defeat in history. The embarrassing match eventually gave Ghana a dominating spirit over the Super Eagles of Nigeria that has lasted till date.

2. Algeria 5-1 Nigeria (1990 Africa Cup of Nations): This is one of the worst scorelines ever recorded by the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The Eagles were scorched with a 4 goal margin in the opening match of the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations.

3. Zambia 5-1 Nigeria: Nigeria recorded another devastating 5-1 loss to Zambia in a 1974 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Lusaka.

4. Togo 5-2 Nigeria: Surprisingly, African football under-dogs, Togo also seized a spot in Nigeria’s worst scoreline in history. The Eagles lost 5-2 in a 1983 WAFU Cup semi-finals in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire.
