A Ten-month-old baby choked to death on a piece of apple on a family day out to the zoo – despite his mum’s desperate attempts to save his life.
Tragic Ben Masters, from Worthing, was having a picnic at Eastbourne’s Drusillas Zoo Park with brother Dominic and mum Lucy when he suddenly started choking on the tiny piece of fruit. Stewardess Lucy used her airline training to give him first aid, but he went into cardiac arrest shortly after staff arrived to help. An ambulance was called, and paramedics arrived to rush him to Eastbourne District General Hospital. He was then transferred to St George’s Hospital in London, where he died six days later.
Speaking at his son’s inquest, dad Adam paid tribute to the Drusilla’s staff who battled to save Ben’s life. He said: “I wanted to come today because, having not been present, the timeline was very jumbled. It’s helped to clarify that evidence for me and have a bit of closure. I’d like to thank everybody involved – the staff at Drusilla’s and the medical team and the staff at the hospital did a fantastic job.”
