TBT: 5 All-time Highest Goalscorers At The Africa Cup Of Nations

The Africa cup of Nations just like every footballing tournament take notes of the goals scored as they are an important part of the competitions. Regardless of how well your team plays, the goal determines the outcome of a match, hence they are very important and this importance is also transferred to the scorers of these goals. Winning the Africa cup of Nations is very important to African players and this is why they all try to bring in their A-game and make a lasting impact and impression at their game. While many players have scored spectacular and amazing goals at the competition, not all of these players have been able to achieve the feats our all-time highest AFCON goal scorers have achieved. Many of their records are still largely unbroken till date, that said, see the top 5 all-time highest goals scorers ever at the Africa cup of Nations.

5. Didier Drogba, Patrick Mboma And Hassan Hossam (11 Goals): These players were not just top goal scorers, they were fantastic and super ordinary players both home and abroad. Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast) who used to play for Chelsea performed wonders at the AFCON competitions he played in, although he could not lead his country to any AFCON triumph, he, however, scored a total of 11 goals. Patrick Mboma’s name would forever go down in history as one of the best players to have come out of Africa, Mboma’s Cameroonian fans could count on him to shoot the ball with his famous left legs and have it land in the net. Hassan Hossam was also another spectacular player with the highly coveted 11 goals at the AFCON. Hossam scored these 11 goals at the seven AFCON competition he played in and his goals were able to give his Egypt country an AFCON win in 1986, 1988 and 2006.

4. Hassan El-Shazly (12 Goals): Hassan El-Shadzy is one of the greatest footballers to have ever come out of Africa. The star nicknamed “sharp-shooter with both feet” won the top marksman award in 1963 after scoring a total of six goals in that year alone. El-Shazly has netted a total of 12 goals at the AFCON competition in which he played in from 1961-1974 for his country Egypt.

3. Rashidi Yekini (13 Goals): Yekini who though was most famous for being the first man to net Nigeria’s first goal at the World cup competition, was also an AFCON icon. Yekini was known to shatter defenses at the AFCON competitions, these he did beautifully well and earned himself the prestigious African Footballer of the year award. He motivated Nigeria to win the 1994 AFCON competition as he bagged the best player of the tournament award for himself.

2. Laurent Pokou (14 Goals): Before the AFCON competition saw Eto, Laurent Pokou of Ivory Coast was king. The footballer has bagged the highest goalscorer of the AFCON competition twice, scored six goals for his country in 1968 and another eight in 1970. Popularly called L’homme d’Asmara (The man of Asmara), Pokou at one time was the best footballer Africa has ever witnessed.

  1. Samuel Eto’o (18 Goals): Samuel Eto’o remains the top player to have come out from Africa and to have graced the AFCON tournament. With a total of 18 goals at the tournament, the fast and super strong Eto’o is one of the very few AFCON legends to have won the tournament twice (2000 & 2002).
