On Thursday, the match between two-time Grand Slam finalists at the US Open ended after only three points when fifth-seeded Jasmine Paolini and former No. 1 Karolina Pliskova had to retire due to self-injury. Following their shortened match, Elena Rybakina, the #4 seed, withdrew from the competition due to an unspecified injury.
The score in the second-round contest between Pliskova and Paolini was 15-all, with Paolini serving, when Pliskova stepped awkwardly on her left foot while trying to change directions during a point she lost. That made it 30-15, and that’s where the scoreboard remained, as Pliskova headed to the sideline and asked for a visit from a trainer.

Pliskova, the runner-up at Wimbledon in 2021 and the US Open in 2016, took off her left sock and both of her shoes. After having her left foot evaluated by the trainer, Pliskova eventually announced she was unable to compete and hobbled off the court at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
