The Super Eagles of Nigeria have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second time since the turn of the century, as they were unable to find the winning goal in their world cup qualifier play-off match against the Black Stars of Ghana, in a brutal enthralling encounter at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja. The Ghanaians obviously had a game plan from the get-go, with the way they set up right from the first leg in Kumasi at the Baba Yara stadium.

The Ghanaians scored with their only shot on target. The Black Stars captain, Thomas Partey received a pass at the edge of the penalty area from a short corner kick and blasted a low pile-driver which the Super Eagles goalkeeper found it difficult to deal with it, as Francis Uzoho watched the ball slip underneath him into the net.

The Super Eagles not too long afterwards grabbed an equaliser from the penalty spot, after Ademola Lookman was tripped inside the box. VAR decider it was a penalty and the Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong placed the ball in the opposite direction of the Ghanaian goalie Walcott equalising for the Eagles.

The second half saw far-from clear cut chances again, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw that sees Ghana qualify on away goals.
