The Oscars returned after three years and everyone was ecstatic because for once, people can actually sit beside one another as they emerge winners and share in the smiles and tears of their fellow nominees.
Ariana DeBose made history at the 94th Academy Award on the 27th of March when she became the first Afro Latina and first openly queer woman of color to win an Oscar. A feat not many have been able to achieve, this diva has broken the chains. DeBose took home the best-supporting actress award for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s retelling of “West Side Story,” 60 years after Rita Moreno won an Oscar for the same role.
3. Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson
Unlike others who have been nominated several but still not won or won on their second nomination, Questlove won his first Oscar on his first nomination and he literarily was teary-eyed. He is much more than just the drummer for The Roots, titles like author, songwriter, and film director are just a few of the many hats the talented Philly native wears on any given day. Questlove walked away with his first Oscar at the 94th Annual Academy Awards for the Best Documentary category for the film Summer of Soul which he directed.
