Sexual assault is an extremely traumatic and painful experience for a lot of victims. Several of them deal with severe trauma and struggle to open up about the painful experience. According to several surveys, 80% of women in society have been victims of sexual assault this figure is quite alarming and opens how eyes to see that a lot of women are not safe in today’s society.

Many women have since come forward with their experiences of being sexually harassed by colleagues and bosses, costing influential men in the entertainment industry and the media.

Every time a sexual assault case is brought forward to the public, different reactions trail the incident and it is believed that these reactions have contributed greatly to the present case of assault in society. Everyone has a role to play in preventing sexual assault. There are many different ways that you can step in or make a difference.

Many victims who tell others about their assault must endure a ‘second assault’ in the form of negative reactions, such as victim-blaming and disbelief. One-third to two-thirds of victims may experience such reactions, which have negative mental and physical health effects on the victims. In Nigeria, a lot of rape cases are not reported due to the stigma and how the case is being handled by both authorities and society. The people face stigma with certain people blaming them for being wayward.

They blame victims for their dressing, stating that they were seductive and attracted the monster who raped them. The judicial system also aids in this by dragging cases of assault or refusing to handle the case with a high hand. Every voice matters in sexual assault cases and here are a few ways society can help demand justice and protect women.

1. Never blame a victim
A victim is never responsible for being raped vilifying victims for their dressing, being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or accused of making up claims of rape are extremely wrong and need to be stopped.

2. Stop questioning a Victims story
Most times when a victim tells the story of sexual assault, people are quick to ask if he/she is sure about their experience. By doing this you are calling them a liar or believing that they are fabricating the story. A sexual assault victim needs all the support and confidence they can get to open up and doubting their story makes it difficult for them to open up.

3. Stop shielding the rapist or obstructing justice.
Report a rapist to appropriate authorities so they can be punished for their offense and be taken away from society before they cause more harm.

4. Amplify the campaign against rape and sexual assault on social media
Be a keypad warrior by joining campaigns against sexual assault or rape on social media. Raise several hashtags, post speaking against sexual assault on social media, and also repost and follow organizations that fight against sexual assault in society.

5. Help victims get help through therapy
6. Teach men self-control, respect, and the need to respect women.
