Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men finished the season in sixth and ended closer to the drop zone than to champions Manchester City . Ferguson was once again in the stands at Old Trafford and watched on as Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored twice for the Bluebirds.

After the final whistle, he was required to present an award as honorary president for the Robert Burns International Foundation. Ferguson was spotted speaking to former player Solskjaer after the match with Hungarian outlet Nemzeti Sport documenting the event for the organisation. The Scot reportedly turned to Solskjaer and said to him: “Son! What was that?!”

Ferguson, Solskjaer and Mike Phelan then shared a bottle of wine, presented to them by founder of the charity Zoltan Magyar. United have great work to do to get back into the top four this summer after falling well short this season. Solskjaer is closing in on a deal for Swansea’s Daniel James, while Kalidou Koulibaly, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Nicolas Pepe are also targets.

And executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward says Solskjaer will get the financial backing he requires. Speaking after United released their results for the third quarter of the financial year, he said: “After a turbulent season, everyone at Manchester United is focused on building towards the success that this great club expects and our fans deserve. Preparations for the new season are underway and the underlying strength of our business will allow us to support the Manager and his team as we look to the future.”
