Shocker! Rat Eats N6.5m Cash From Bank’s ATM

A rat ate more than £13,000-worth of cash after busting into an ATM. Bank workers pried open the broken machine to find the money ripped to shreds – and a dead rodent. The rat had dodged CCTV cameras and burrowed into the ATM for its expensive last meal in Tinsukia, India. Workers had just filled up the machine with new notes the day before it stopped working. State Bank of India manager Chandan Sharma said: “The ATM was out of order for a few days and when our technicians opened the kiosk we were shocked to find shredded notes and a dead rat.”Mr Sharma added: “We have started an investigation into this rare incident and will take measures to prevent a recurrence.” SBI is India’s largest bank with more than 50,000 ATMs spread across the country. Most ATMs in India have security cameras installed. But an inspection of the camera footage at the ATM in Tinsukia showed no rat entering it.Of the 2.9 million rupees (£32,000) in the ATM, 1.7 million rupees (£19,000) were recovered intact. But banknotes worth 1.2 million rupees (£13,400) were destroyed. Police Supt Mugdhajyoti Mahanta said: “When the engineer and other officials opened the ATM, they found destroyed notes and also found a dead rat inside the ATM”.Photo Credit: Getty
