Sergio Ramos To Leave Real Madrid On Free Transfer After 16 years At The Bernabeu

Sergio Ramos will leave Real Madrid at the end of the month after 16 years at the Bernabeu, with the club confirming he will be given a farewell ceremony on Thursday.

The veteran centre-back is out of contract on June 30 and talks with the club over an extension hit an impasse long ago, with the 35-year-old unwilling to accept a 10% reduction in salary.

Ramos had also wanted a two-year deal, which Real were unwilling to sanction, and the defender has therefore opted to leave the Bernabeu on a free transfer.

Real Madrid confirmed that Ramos would be leaving on Wednesday evening and he will hold a farewell press conference tomorrow at Valdebebas.

A statement read: ‘Real Madrid announces that tomorrow, on Thursday June 17 at 12.30pm CEST [11.30am BST], there will be an institutional act of tribute and farewell to our captain Sergio Ramos.’

The defender, who has made a mammoth 671 appearances for Real in all competitions, will appear before the media at the Bernabeu, while president Florentino Perez will also be in attendance.

Ramos has enjoyed an outstanding career at Real since signing from Sevilla back in 2006, winning four Champions League titles with the club and five La Liga titles.

He was also part of Spain’s successful dominance of international football between 2008 and 2012, winning all three major tournaments over that period, though he was left out of Spain’s most recent squad for Euro 2020.
Ramos’ season was curtailed by a string of injuries, limited to just 15 appearances in La Liga, while he also missed several matches after testing positive for coronavirus.
The centre-back has already been linked with a host of clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in the market for a new centre-back and have already been linked with Ramos’ teammate Raphael Varane, though the Frenchman would command a big fee and is believed to prefer a move to PSG.
