Nike Inc. has just sold a pair of one of its debut shoes for $437,500 (158,440,625 naira), setting a world record as the first pair of sneakers to be sold at such at public auction.
The Moon Shoe which was designed by Nike co-founder and track coach Bill Bowerman for runners at the 1972 Olympics trials, was said to have been made from Bill’s wife’s waffle iron. Recently, the pair of shoes was the top lot in the first-ever auction dedicated to sneakers at Sotheby’s auction house in New York.The buyer, a Canadian investor and car collector identified as Miles Nadal, was said to have previously paid $850,000 (307,827,500 naira) for 99 other pairs of rare limited collection sneakers offered by Sotheby’s, an artwork selling platform.
Sotheby’s teamed up with streetwear marketplace Stadium Goods to auction 100 pairs of the rarest sneakers ever produced in a venture that reflects their fast-growing status as collectables, among which was Nike’s Moon Shoe.
