Samuel Umtiti: La Liga’s Best Defender Renews Contract With Barcelona!

Samuel Umtiti is not ready to leave Spain.

Barcelona have announced the renewal of Samuel Umtiti until 2023, and the French defender is expected to speak to the media after signing the new contract on Monday (June 4). “FC Barcelona and Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement to extend the player’s contract for a further five seasons through to 2022-23,” a statement read. “The Frenchman will be putting pen to paper on Monday in the Josep Sunol lounge at Camp Nou. He will then speak to the media in the Ricard Maxenchs pressroom.” Umtiti who will return to France after speaking with press on his new deal, was on target in Les Bleus 3-1 win against Italy on Friday, with Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele also on the scoresheet. In 2016, Umtiti arrived Camp Nou from from Lyon for 25 million euros, and he has been one of the key men in Barcelona’s success under coach Ernesto Valverde, forming one of the best centre-back partnerships in Europe with Gerard Pique. During his two seasons at Barcelona, he has made 83 appearances in all competitions, helping the club win La Liga once and the Copa del Rey twice. The 24-year-old was voted as one the best central defenders in LaLiga with his team losing just one of their 38 games to claim their 25th domestic title. Photo Credit: Getty
