A transportation tragedy struck once again in India as 19 people were killed on Thursday morning in a boat accident in Southern India.
The local police force confirmed that most of of the victims died because they locked themselves in a lower cabin of the vessel to escape a storm.
The overloaded public transit boat was caught in a heavy storm and capsized in the Godavari river in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. The medium sized boat was carrying a total of 37 passengers.
A police chief, Kartikeya Misra, confirmed that seventeen people were rescued, or were able to swim to safety and one was missing. Misra further disclosed that: “We recovered fourteen bodies from the lower cabin where people had taken shelter from bad weather. They had bolted the doors and windows, and had no chance to escape when the boat suddenly capsized.”
