Music Review: CKay’s ‘Sad Romance’ Is A Nice Album That Solidifies His Musical Growth

After dropping three EPs Nigerian singer CKay has finally dropped his debut album titled Sad Romance.Singer Ckay Becomes Africa’s Best Global Selling Artist, Rakes Over N2.6bn

It comes as no surprise that his debut album is titled sad romance because he is known to be a skilled lover thanks to the song Love Nwantiti which earned numerous international recognition locally and internationally. This 12-track album features ace artist like Ayra Starr, Davido, Focalistic, Ronisia and Mayra Andrade. So let’s dive in; The track that starts this musical journey is You and he sheds light on how he met his love interest as he confesses his feelings for her. The use of that trumpet and smooth instrumentation in the beginning is worth commending. One thing is certain, this is a CKay classic.

Mmadu and Soja takes us deeper into his his love life as he graphically narrates how he would make love to his love interest.ckay Leave Me Alone is more upbeat than the other songs that came before it but it still centers around his love and what he needs. As the title of the album suggests, it doesn’t seem to be going well, because he keeps on wanting and wanting but not getting. You Cheated, I Cheated Too is typical of an album that is titled Sad Romance because, why not (lol). This track has one of the best sounds and instrumental arrangement on this body of work. CKay just has this smooth way of singing his lyrics that makes you want to close your eyes and let the beats flow through you. Come Close has the first feature on this album and Ayra Starr took the song to another level.

Just as the title implies, he wants nothing more than to get closer to his love interest. Ayra Starr’s voice is beautiful and she once again proved this fact on this track. The hit single that has and is still moving bodies, Watawi featuring Davido and Focalistic is a banger. Samson and Delilah featuring Mayra Andrade reveals the wonders a lover experiences when he is deep in love. Its amazing how CKay manages to talk about love from a very common yet unique perspective. By Now reveals the fact that he is yet to get what he desires from his love interest. One thing that is common in this body of work is his use of love in different way and angles. Emiliana and Love Nwantiti will forever be a hit and there is argument about that. Lose you featuring Ronisia crowns this body of work and it is lovely. This entire album has a silently sad feel about it and it is worth applauding that he combined the right beats and words to produce something beautiful.
Final Thoughts
