Singer R Kelly has been arrested and will remain in jail until he pays $161,000 (£122,000) in child support. The R&B singer was taken into custody after a court hearing in Chicago.David France, manager for Kelly’s ex-wife Andrea Kelly, told the Chicago Sun-Times that Kelly had not made a child support payment that had been due on Tuesday. Kelly’s publicist, Darryll Johnson, says Kelly came to the hearing prepared to pay $50,000 to $60,000 in support for his three children with Ms Kelly. The judge, however, wanted the whole amount. Johnson said Kelly has not been able to work so did not have the money. Cook County Sheriff’s spokesman Sam Randall confirmed the singer had to pay the full amount to leave jail and said that another hearing is scheduled for next Wednesday. Last month, Kelly was charged with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse on four women, including three who were underage at the time. The charges, which are unrelated to the child support issue, date back to 1998. Kelly, 52, denies the allegations and says his accusers are lying. During an interview with CBS, he said he had “been buried alive, but I’m alive”, adding that he needed someone to help him “not have a big heart”.
