Manchester United are set to name their first director of football ahead of a summer shake up – with Paul Scholes ready for a position.

Paul Scholes is set to make an unexpected return to Manchester United as part of the club’s summer restructuring, according to reports. United legend Scholes is one of the Red Devils best ever midfielders having come through the famous academy as part of the ‘Class of 92’ alongside the likes of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville.

He played 718 times over 20 seasons under Sir Alex Ferguson’s tutelage – winning 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions League crowns and was a key part of the incredible Treble campaign in 1998/99.

United are ready to shake up the club behind-the-scenes with a Director of Football one of their No.1 priorities, to help them mix it with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool at the summit of the table. Ole Gunanr Solskjaer’s current assistant Mike Phelan is thought to be in line to be named technical director. With that appointment there will be other roles created and Scholes’ name is in the mix for a postition.

It is currently unknown what the precise job Scholes will be given but it is thought he will help provide the decision making process at a board level, with his expertise in the make-up of United seen as a huge plus. Former England international Scholes has previously spent time at Old Trafford away from the pitch.

After retiring in 2013, the 44-year-old spent time helping Nicky Butt coach the under 19s before assisting Ryan Giggs with first team training after David Moyes was sacked.

Having moved into the media, Scholes returned to football earlier this year with an ill-fated spell as Oldham Athletic’s manager. He only lasted 31 days at Boundary Park before he quit, having only managed a single win in seven matches during his tenure. Fellow former United stars Patrice Evra and Darren Fletcher are also being looked at for future roles at the club.
