The Super Falcons were full of guts but a 37th-minute strike by Gabi Nunes separated the two-time Olympic silver medallists from the nine-time African champions.

For the first time in sixteen years, Nigeria’s flag was flown at the tournament as Ajibade guided the Falcons to the Stade Matmut Atlantique. With some superb runs down the left of the South Americans, he really led from the front. However, on the multiple times she sent the ball into the area, her colleagues in the fore were unable to accurately read her moves.

Her final pass, after a brave run down the line in the 7th minute was blocked, and in the 16th minute, she was the initiator of a double-barrelled attack on the Brazilian goal that saw Chinwendu Ihezuo’s shot blocked and Christy Ucheibe’s follow-up punched away.

Chiamaka Nnadozie made a stop against the onslaught Portilho in the 20th minute, and five minutes later, Gabi Nunes’ long-range shot was again well-read. The legendary Brazil captain Marta appeared to have handed her side the lead in the 36th minute when she shot beyond Nnadozie after the Falcons’ defense failed to clear, but the call was for offside.

Ajibade forced another smart save from the Brazilian goalkeeper in the 71st minute, and Ucheibe did the same with minutes left. But the Canarinhas held on to pick all three points in the evening.
