Osun State Teachers Protest Local Government Autonomy

Teachers in Osun state under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Teachers on Tuesday protested at the State House of Assembly, registering their concerns over the agitation for local government autonomy. The NUT’s demonstration came barely a week after the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees were at the Assembly to ask the lawmakers to support LG autonomy.

The teachers, who were dressed in NUT branded T-shirts and led by the Chairman of the Osun State chapter of the Union, Mr. Wakeel Amudah, sang solidarity songs as they moved to the Assembly complex. The agitated teachers expressed worry over prompt payment of salaries of primary school teachers if local governments were given autonomy. The chairman, who read the address of the National Acting General Secretary of NUT, Mike Ene, said local government councils in the country did not have the capacity to pay teachers’ salaries.
