Meghan said that while her husband was deeply concerned about her emotional fragility – gripping her hand tightly at public events – her efforts to seek medical help were rebuffed by palace officials, who worried about the impact on the monarchy.
She described herself as a sort of prisoner in Kensington Palace.
She then explained that the royal family had taken her passport, her keys and her driving license when she married Harry, and she felt she could not get help on her own.
“I couldn’t just call an Uber to the palace,” she said.
Oprah later asked Harry how he had felt when Meghan had told him she felt suicidal, and he admitted he was “ashamed” of admitting it to his family.
