Occupy Lekki Toll Gate, Oyo Clash, Valentine And Other Events That Took Place Over The Weekend

  1. Nigerian governors were at one another’s throats as the week faded into what we though will be a beautiful, romantic and lovely weekend, courtesy of the Valentine’s Day celebration. The Governor’s Forum, both in SE, SW and the North had held a meeting on Thursday and spilled words across to one another over the Fulani herdsmen and farmers clash across the country. As they agreed that open, night and underage grazing are banned in the country, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi justified the herdsmen using AK-47s and blamed the South Eastern, South Western Governors and Samuel Ortom of Benue of intolerance which, according to him, led to the clashes. Samuel Ortom in return was disappointed and queried which part of the constitution legalises the use of AK-47.
  2. Nigerian youths are sure appreciative of giants and heroes that stand by them in the fight for course and again, they took over social media to spread the gospel of Femi Falana, the sage Nigerian lawyer who came through with the unfreezing of the #EndSARS protesters bank account. Naming his a supportive father, a great asset to their generation and more, the shower of encomium was so amazing and encouraging. See some here

  4. While the Governors were at their back and forths, the Nigerian youths kept on going with its plan to #OccupyLekkiTollGate and when the D-day eventually came, the youths and the government got into a second round of war. Lagos State Government had deployed security agencies to stop the protests from holding, leading to the arrest of over 30 youths, including comedian Mr Macaroni, singer Idahams and his DJ friend. The streets of Twitter were scattered likewise the Toll gate, and many condemned the Government’s approach, even Adamu Garba who had spoken against the October 2020 #EndSARS protest. The arrested youths were all released but will be arraigned today, Monday.
  5. Nigerian youths could not help but bring back a memory which stirred so much controversy on the social media space as the #OccupyLekkiTollGate saga was ongoing. A video of the former Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode was brought back to the timeline, where he sternly warned that Sanwo-Olu is not a fit for the State’s Governance. “Ambode wanred us oo but we didn’t listen”, many of the youths lamented, while some others are of the opinion that the ex-Governor would do same if he is still in power. Watch video and see Nigerian youths’ reactions here.
  6. Oyo State too had a very rough weekend too, as Hausas and Yorubas had a clash at Shasha Market, in Akinyele Local Government area in Ibadan, the State capital. The clash was said to have started after an Hausa man stabbed a Yoruba cobbler on Thursday, as a result of a misunderstanding. The cobbler was rushed to the hospital but declared dead on Friday morning, and in defence, the market was scattered with violence. Governor Seyi Makinde ordered that the market be shut down and imposed a curfew in the area, pending further actions. Meanwhile, another Wanti market in Bauchi state was gutted by fire, leading to the destruction of over 90 shops, goods and properties.

  7. The situation in Oyo State got half of the defunct Psquare duo – Mr P into trouble and serious dragging. He had offered some advise on how to maintain peace in the State to the Governor but Nigerian social media users found him unworthy of giving such advise as his home – he and his brother, RudeBoy – is still not settled.
  8. After all of the violence and wawulence came the overrated and so much hyped lover’s day – Valentine’s 2021 – with all of the dramas it brings. Some got engaged, many were disgraced in public as their proposals, many got gifts, few got very expensive gifts like cars, and many more. Oh, Mercy Aigbe with the lingerie snaps… Nkechi Blessing’s lit birthday snaps… yes, D’banj bought wife a Range Rover for Val’s day… Fashion mogul Toyin Lawani said yes to her Photographer and Creative Partner, Segun Wealth. DJ Cuppy jumped on the trend to share snaps of herself and Fireboy DML in bed, with a love emoji in her caption. For some, it was a day of oppression, for some others it was a day of reconciling with love – whatever it is, Valentine’s Day 2021 is done and dusted.10 Weird And Unusual Places To Find Love
  9. Violence struck again on day of love celebration, however, as suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked some farmers at Ijugbere in the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, killing tat least three of them. This came two days after a clash between the operatives of the Ondo State Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, and armed herders in the same LGA, which led to the death of two villagers. God keep us safe in this nation.
