Nigeria’s Current Debt Is Enough To Build 160 Kainji Dam – Peter Obi

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has said that Nigeria’s current debt is enough to build 160 Kainji dam.

On a post released on his social media page late Friday, Peter Obi wrote that Ex-president, Sir Tafawa Balewa borrowed $82m to build the Kainji dam, which still powers the whole country after 62 years.

“Sir Tafawa Balewa borrowed $82m to build Kainji dam; 62 years later we still benefit from Kainji dam.”

He spoke further saying Nigeria’s current debt has been wasted on white elephant projects. He mention that if the said money had been put to use judiciously, it would be enough to build 160 Kainji dam. This would guarantee the country steady supply of electricity.

“Today, we owe a debt that that could build 160 Kainji dams. But where are the dams? We have not invested in regenerative projects.”

Mr. Peter Obi has also begged universities to give students break to enable them vote in the general election in February 25. According to Obi, students who were home during the registration exercise constitute a block that cannot be ignored in the election process and so the university authorities should make their participation in the election possible.
