Nigerian senators on Tuesday criticized Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for allegedly questioning their constitutional authority to confirm the nomination of appointees by the executive arm. And if the former university professor does not publicly withdraw his statements, reports indicate that he risks being impeached by the legislative arm.The Senate has also vowed to suspend all issues relating to confirmation from the Executive, just as it urged the Acting President to respect the constitution of the land. While threatening that legislators might move against the leadership of the Senate if it failed to take a drastic action against the executive in 48 hours, the members of the Senate asked that invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to any member be ignored. The brouhaha stems from the refusal of the executive to drop Ibrahim Magu as the acting chairman of the EFCC after his nomination was rejected twice by the upper legislative chamber. Yemi Osinbajo had said that despite the rejection of Magu’s nomination by the Senate, the powers of the legislative arm to dictate appointments were more limited than the citizens believe.Photo Credit: Getty
