AFCON: Nigeria Defeats Egypt In Explosive Opening Match, Iheanacho Scores

In a brilliant performance by the Super Eagles of Nigeria who kicked off their AFCON tournament with a huge win against former AFCON champions the Pharaohs Of Egypt in Garoua, Cameroon. Super Eagles Nigeria

In a fantastic defensive performance, the Super Eagles stood strong defensively dominating play in the first half, having the lion share of possession and locking the Egyptian team in their half for the most part of the first half.

The Super Eagles took the lead with a sumptuous half-volley by Kelechi Iheanacho right on the 30th-minute mark after some nice work on the wings by Moses Simon of Nantes, who after beating his marker for pace sent in a dangerous cross from the Left-wing but was half-cleared by Ahmed Hegazi due to pressure on him by Taiwo Awoniyilifting his clearance in the air that gave room for Joe Aribo to calmly cushion an assist into the path of Kelechi Iheanacho who as ever duly obliged after controlling the balling then blasting it into the top left corner sending Nigerians into a frenzy.

Super Eagles dominated the first half of the game, silencing Egypt’s main man, Mohamed Salah. In the 25th minute, Moses Simon missed an opportunity, hitting the side net.

Awoniyi narrowly scored the Super Eagles’ second goal in the 37th and 41st minutes but was stopped by Egypt’s goalkeeper, El Shenawy.

The Egyptians came out back in the second half like a team on a mission but the Super Eagles defence stood resolute. The Super Eagles defence was breached even when the Pharaohs started piling up the pressure with some sleek football that saw Mo Salah released breaking the Eagles offside trap but goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was quick off his line to deny the Liverpool Egyptian captain.

The was also a penalty scare against Nigeria also in the second half but was deemed a dive or sufficient contact by VAR.

Super Eagles set up in the second half to hit the Egyptians on the counter and created 3 fantastic opportunities on the break in the second half but the Chidera Ejuke and Kelechi Iheanacho couldn’t convert either of the opportunities. This is an area interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen will need to work on. The Eagles boss the midfield that is an area of strength.

Eguavoen starts his second spell with the Eagles of to a win, using the youthfulness, energy and pace of this Eagles side to its full capacity.
