Former NFL 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, has revealed he will continue combating racial injustice in America whether or not he returns to the NFL.Colin said this after he accepted Sports Illustrated‘s Muhammad Ali Legacy Award at the annual SI‘s Sportsperson of the Year ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.“I say this as a person who receives credit for using my platform to protest systemic oppression, racialized injustice and and the dire consequences of anti-blackness in America,” Kaepernick said“I accept this award not for myself, but on behalf of the people. Because if it were not for my love of the people, I would not have protested. And if it was not for the support from the people, I would not be on this stage today.“With our without the NFL’s platform, I will continue to work for the people because my platform is the people.”The Daily Show host Trevor Noah introduced Kaepernick before Beyoncé took to the stage to hand him the award. Beyoncé said that Kaepernick’s message was not to protest those who serve selflessly to defend the nation, but to draw attention to the work that still needs to be done in terms of race relations.Photo Credit: Getty
