No longer under the protection of Immunity, the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osun State Chapter, has demanded the arrest of former state Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The party on Wednesday, November 28 called for his arrest over the alleged forged police report the former Governor presented before the Election Petition Tribunal in 2007. osunThe party has sought for the help of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to arrest Aregbesola over the alleged crime. According to the release forwarded to journalists by PDP’s chairman, Soji Adagunodo, the party recalled that before taking over from his predecessor in November, 2010, Aregbesola and one other, were facing six counts bordering on forging and presenting a fake police report to an election petition tribunal in 2007. Adagunodo pointed out that the matter then was being reviewed by an Abuja High Court, but it could not proceed as Aregbesola became governor in 2010, and because of the immunity attached to his office, the case was swept under the carpet. “Now that Mr Aregbesola no longer enjoys constitutional immunity, the Inspector General of Police is duty bound to arrest him and present him before the court to prove his innocence in the charge,” He added. He also recalled that the “forged” police report was the basis the Appellate Tribunal in Ibadan ordered a retrial of Aregbesola’s petition in 2009. osunIn his words, he said: “It was curious that the former governor and his party abandoned the report when their petition went back for trial in the same year. “While forgery itself is a weighty crime, forging a security document like a police report should be a matter of concern to the public and must not be swept under the carpet in any guise,” Adagunodo added. The police however, is yet to officially respond to the allegations and demand of the Osun PDP.Photo Credit: Getty
