New Zealand Approves 10 Days Paid Leave For Domestic Violence Victims

New Zealand has approved 10 days paid leave for victims of domestic violence trying to escape the abuse. This is a way of the country curving the alarming rate of family violence being recorded. Greens MP Jan Logie, a member of the ruling Labour-led coalition, introducing the scheme, said the leave would help victims handle their situations better; move homes or settle children into new schools. She also added that it will help protect victims from stalking abusers, who try to destroy their lives and careers. “This is a win for victims, a win for employers, and a win for society,” she said. “This law is a world first and it will make a significant difference for people trying to escape domestic violence.” The country has one of the world’s highest rates of domestic violence, which has been blamed on high levels of alcohol and drug use as well as societal attitudes towards the status of women.  Photo Credit: Getty
