Major General Farouk Yahaya, the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff COAS has resumed office, taking over the place of the deceased former COAS, Ibrahim Attahiru. President Buhari had appointed Yahaya as the COAS on Thursday as confirmed in a statement via the Official Twitter Handle of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, with the username @DefenceHQ.
Prior to his appointment, Yahaya Farouk was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named Operation HADIN KAI.
As he assumes office today, the Chief of Defence Staff CDS General Lucky Irabor played host to him in his office, at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Abuja. Irabor congratulated him on his appointment as the 22nd COAS, describing it as a well deserved appointment. The CDS also wished him a successful tenure in office as he assumes command, urging Farouk Yahaya to build on the legacy of his predecessor, particularly in the fight against insurgency and banditry.
The new COAS was accompanied on the visit by the Chief of Policy and Plans Headquarters Nigerian Army, Maj Gen Benjamin Ahanotu. As reported by the army, the Highlight of the visit was the CDS’ presentation of Nigerian Army flag to the new COAS.
