Celebrities Turn Dope Kings: NDLEA New Tactics Against Drug Abuse

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been doing a lot of arresting as they have adopted new tactics in curbing the rise of drug abuse in the country.

But firstly, what is this menace they are fighting, called drug abuse; Drug Abuse is the excessive use of psychoactive drugs, such as alcohol, pain medications, or illegal drugs. It can lead to physical, social, or emotional harm. Over the years, the NDLEA has adopted the ‘Surprise Raiding Strategy’ (SRS), where they just raid a house or person(s) without their knowledge, surprising them in order to obtain what drugs are in their possession. This tactic has drawn a lot of celebrities out and their usage of drugs exposed to the general public.

Although with the way society is going, taking drugs, smoking weed and the likes is now a ‘normal thing’ which should not be, the influence of celebrities on fans runs deeper than most are willing to accept.

Over the years, singing about drugs and the portrayal of drugs, in Nigerian songs and music videos is something that has gained ground to the point that 9 out of 10 Nigerian musical videos have this. Just the way feminine objectification has become a norm, so has celebrity turn dope kings are hailed by their fans. It is funny how people are now hailing what is wrong and obviously having a negative effect on the youths of nowadays, like it is right. Nigerian celebrities like Naira Marley, Zinoleesky, Mohbad, De General, Olamide, Davido, Wizkid etc, who have millions of followers on social media platforms are found wanting when it comes to painting this sad picture. The arrest of Zinoleesky and Mohbad had their fans screaming out, that it is not fair, but the NDLEA stated that they got a tip that the singers were in possession of drugs and they were. Even as the NDLEA are innocently doing their jobs, there were still some Nigerians who condemned them for the act.

This brings us to the amount of influence these Nigerian celebrities have on their fans and youths in general. It’s like this because these youths see their favs smoking like a furnace, drinking and all, they, on the other hand, tend to emulate what these celebrities do because they want to be like them, and it’s sadly funny how these celebs keep on living their lives the way they want, forgetting that they have people looking up to them. Recently, the NDLEA has taken to arresting celebrities, and funny enough, since they started this, there has been a reduction in the rate at which celebrities have been seen flaunting themselves smoking weed on social media. In all, social media is a very powerful platform and celebrities are equally powerful when it comes to influencing the younger generation; hence celebrities turn dope kings should be conscious of the message they pass across to their fans. While the NDLEA on the other hand should be commended definitely for the various tactics they have adopted in order to curb drug abuse in the country.
