The newly appointed Director Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Benjamin Sawyerr, has said the gunmen who attacked the Nigerian Defence Academy NDA consistently studied the institution and rehearsed before carrying out the attack.
Sawyerr said this in an interview on the Voice of Nigeria, further explaining that the officers who were killed during the attack were slain for resisting being abducted by the attackers.
According to him, the gunmen had consistently studied and rehearsed what they wanted to do because where they went to are the quarters for officers. Describing the incident as unfortunate, Sawyerr added that the NDA’s security architecture was breached. “It was an unfortunate incident. We lost two of our very brave officers”, he said.

“Every security architecture is susceptible to breaches; it is unfortunate that that of the NDA was breached. I can tell you that these people had consistently studied and rehearsed what they wanted to do, because where they went to are the quarters for officers. The officers, who were killed, fought bravely against being abducted”, he added.
Sawyerr then solicited the support of the Nigerian media in projecting the image of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) positively, noting that it is necessary for Nigerians to appreciate the selfless sacrifices of men and women of the AFN towards ensuring peace and unity of the nation.

Adding that the media is a powerful instrument that coordinates all the elements of national powers to bring about national development, he also urged it to leverage its prowess to change the negative perception and narrative on the security situation in the country.
