It been a long time coming and now the time is finally here as Afropop, soul, alt-rock and R&B singer Simi drops her fifth studio album titled To Be Honest.
The 11-track body of work has just three amazing features which are her hubby Adekunle Gold, fast rising singer Fave and her lovely daughter, Deja. So lets get into the KOKO of the matter; To Be Honest opens with the track Story Story and it sounds just like what a Simi would drop, like literally. Here she speaks about how far she has come, the ups and downs and the fact that she has paid her dues to be where she is today. To an extent one can say that this singing angel has been able to stand out in the music industry as one of the divas taking African music worldwide and setting the pace. We can’t help but comment on the beat placement and its instrumentality, just beautiful. Born Again gives us that light reggae feel as she reveals how she will be standing her ground as she is born again and no weapon formed against her will survive.

Simi just knows how to make something ordinary sound extra-ordinary. The hit single that has gotten people talking and in love with this soulful body of work is Naked Wire and its just lovely in and out. The mother of one drops a love song for every one out there and it couldn’t have been more apt. The track with the first feature on this album is Loyal featuring Fave and it is just amazing from the sound of the keyboard in the beginning to the play of the voices, come on, Simi embodies alternative rock and soul like never before. Just as the title implies, she speaks about the qualities of one who is loyal and how she ensures to surround herself with people who embody this word. Fave on this track with her unique voice and manner of delivery couldn’t have been more beautiful. To Be Honest just creates that cocooning effect where you just want to be vibing to the album as you go through your day. From the track titles, to her lyrics, Simi is dropping some honest music right here.

Of course, when expecting a Simi album, expect AJ Baby to be on it and Balance satisfies this craving. A combination of this diva with Adekunle Gold on Afropop beats will definitely get you nodding and then moving soothingly to this smooth beat. Balance speaks about loving but not killing yourself because of love as that is not love. These two are so cute together, no cap. Logba Logba is that track that gets you on your feet right from the beginning to the end. Its an amazing thing that Simi has been able to manage and establish herself in her genre. Its always nice when she gives us alte-rock vibes as she does on this track. Finally one track that features everyone’s sweetheart Deja, Easy and we are loving it. No Joy is definitely the anthem of many people as dragging and trolling has become the order of the day especially on social media. This track couldn’t have been more precise. Temper is Simi making it known that she is going for the bag and nothing will be stopping her. Its just beautiful how this queen takes us on a musical journey and leaves everyone feeling refreshed in the end. Nobody walks down the R&B lane as she once again speaks about love and how she deserves better and will not be settling for less. The track that ends this blissful musical journey is Love For Me and we just want more. Of course Simi gives us climax on this track and we couldn’t have asked for something better. On this body of work, her lyrics, delivery, instrumentation, themes and all is just apt and in alignment with TBH idea.
Simi’s To Be Honest is indeed a step higher for the singer and we have to commend her for delivering expressly well. This body of work gets a 8/10 and we surely say well done.
