Music Review: Olamide’s 999 EP Is A Poor Craft From A Rap God

Olamide 999 EP
Olamide is no stranger to the rap scene. He is known for his ability to juxtapose the indigenous language, Yoruba into his art and he is loved for this, maybe not unique in the style but loved nonetheless.

The YBNL boss is arguably one of the biggest rap stars in the industry and when he announced that his EP will be dropping (something he did not tease us with), we were expecting to be thrilled.
However, we must say that the album is a far cry from what we know Badoo can do. We listened carefully to each track repeatedly and for the umpteenth time came up with the same response – this album is a disgrace.
For a good span of 30 minutes, the Pawon crooner tried to prove his worth and bag his place as the king of rap street in Nigeria but the effort is as a drowning man clinching straws for survival.

The bars are weak, the punchlines do not carry power and even the street orientation for which Olamide is known is painfully absent. A number of folks might feel that this critic is negatively painted but it is the saddening truth that even for street rap, the father of Milly is losing his throne to Zlatan and Naira Marley.

We must however credit him for the ensemble of new acts he has on the album. It shows that the YBNL man who recently signed an international record contract has a great ear for listening and scouting talents. That we must praise him for.
In Rich and Famous, Prophesy, Demons (feat Jackmillz) and Wonma, Olamide delivers. He brings that Olamide we are dying to see. The rest of the songs are just bland and we are left wondering what Olamide was thinking.
If you have followed Olamide from his days of humble beginnings, from Eniduro, you will find yourself asking the same questions as we are asking.
The album feels rushed and desperate, as though Olamide was trying to put out a project for his poor 2019 and no nomination at the Headies. Olamide needs to get his rave back. Perhaps a break from the industry will help his career.
Once again, kudos to Olamide for finding and helping the career of this young rappers but a poor and below standard project from the acclaimed rap god.
