Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has described this season as the most difficult of his career so far after losing his place in the team.

The Frenchman – who had coronavirus over the summer – has only completed 90 minutes twice this season and has been routinely benched by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in favour of a more disciplined and defensive holding duo of Scott McTominay and Fred.

Pogba has also faced uncertainty surrounding his future, with his contract expiring in 18 months, while he was disappointed that the club did not consult him before activating an extension clause.

The 27-year-old has spent the past week with the France national team, helping the side beat Portugal on Saturday night, and it has been a welcome change of pace for Pogba after a difficult period at United.

‘I had never known such a difficult period in my career,’ the midfielder said on Sunday.

‘The French national team is a breath of fresh air. We are very happy to come here and all very happy to see each other again. It is not the same as with the club. We all group together, it is magical. We realise that everyone is happy to come and that makes a difference.’

France boss Didier Deschamps spoke about Pogba’s struggles at United after their shock midweek loss to Finland and feels his situation with the Red Devils has affected him on and off the pitch.

‘He’s not in his best form, of course. I knew that before the game,’ said the French coach on Friday.

‘This match was meant to give him some rhythm. He knew that he would only play for an hour. It’s hard to remember to be positive. Obviously, he’s not in one of his better periods. Like all players who have a club situation that is not positive, they are also impacted mentally. I know him well enough and it can happen at some points.’Photo Credit: Getty
