This is a tricky question for this fight. There is a belt on the line, though it’s more of a souvenir than a symbol of accomplishment like real world championship straps. Both men will be paid handsomely for their efforts, so money is not really at stake. That said, there is something on the line here, and it’s mostly pride and legacy.
McGregor has projected himself confidently throughout the hype for this fight, as he normally does. He will need a comeback because fans and media can be ruthless when an athlete talks the talk and fails to walk the walk. The fight is taking place in eight-ounce gloves, which is supposed to favor McGregor. That fact will be one of many thrown in the UFC star’s face if he is defeated.
Mayweather still has more to lose. His wealth is impenetrable by professional failure but he is not at risk of losing wealth if he is upset by McGregor. However, if Mayweather were to lose to McGregor, he will face pretty stiff intangible consequences.
He’ll face an even more vicious attack from fans and members of the media. He will be the subject of thousands of memes for the next few weeks. It would be pretty humiliating for a man who has never faced defeat as a professional. In addition to public ridicule, Mayweather will be a laughingstock within his own sport. Boxing fans expect Mayweather to not only win, but to dominate McGregor. If he doesn’t, his reported final fight will be seen as a failure.
