Celebrity make-up vlogger James Charles is currently in the eye of a devastating internet storm, as the personality has seen his 16 million strong following on YouTube drop massively over the weekend.
Following a 43 minute video exposé published by his former mentor Tati Westbrook, Charles has been wracked by scandal after scandal as his following has dropped by nearly three million and counting – the potential largest drop a creator has ever seen on the platform.
Who is James Charles?
James Charles, full name James Charles Dickinson, is a vlogger, make-up artist and model from Bethlehem in New York. The 19 year old started his YouTube channel in 2015 posting make-up tutorial videos.
He went viral on Twitter two years ago, after he brought his own lighting with him to his yearbook shoot. Thanks to the popularity of his videos, in 2016 he became the first male ambassador for CoverGirl and went on to launch his own Morphe makeup palette.
The teen has also made celebrity friends aplenty, once doing Kylie Jenner’s makeup for a Halloween-inspired video tutorial.
Proving his success over the past few years has paid off, he won the award for Best Channel in the beauty category at the 8th Streamy Awards. Last year, he walked the runway for MarcoMarco during LA Fashion Week.
At the peak of his fame, Charles amassed 16.75 million subscribers on YouTube and currently has 1.5 billion views on YouTube. Following a number of controversies, however, he has seen his following plummet to 13.9 million at the time of publication – a difference of nearly 3 million.
