While security agencies were still struggling to contain the extreme violence in Kogi state, all hell was let loose in another Western state of Nigeria on Sunday, as a tribal clash in Ondo state left at least 20 people dead.
The free-for-all fight started in the Sabo area of Akure, the state capital between some Yoruba and Hausa locals in the community. It was triggered by the sudden appearance of a Yoruba masquerade in the Hausa dominated settlement. The followers of the masquerade attempted to disrupt business in the settlement, but their cultural move was not accepted by the Northern migrants, who replied by sporadic violence.
Confirming the tribal war, the Ondo state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, disclosed that the command has started investigating the matter. He said: “We learnt that some people who were following a masquerader had issues with some members of the Hausa community. But immediately we drafted our men there, normalcy was returned. We are still looking for the people that caused the crisis. If we arrest them, we will charge them to court.”
