Pop megastar Mariah Carey will be queen of the night at the Billboard Music Awards 2019 as she’s set to receive the prestigious Icon award.
The We Belong Together singer will receive the top honour at this year’s BBMAs on 1 May, and will also perform to celebrate her achievement. After thanking the awards for the gong, Mariah shared a series of Instagram Stories noting her incredible career highlights, including her five octave range and whistle tone. She’s isn’t called ‘the voice’ for nothing.
Mariah’s self-titled debut album soared up the Billboard 200 chart in 1990 and was certified nine times platinum. It featured some of Mariah’s early iconic hits, lile Vision Of Love and Love Takes Time. According to Billboard, Mariah is also one of few artists to have two diamond-certified (10 times platinum each) albums.
Mariah, 49, has released 15 studio albums and is the only artist to ever rule the Hot 100 in every year of any decade. Does it get more impressive than that? When you’re Mariah, it does as the pop superstar’s classic ballad We Belong Together received Billboard’ song of the decade – the 00s – honour after spending 14 weeks at number one.
Mariah will likely perform a medley of her hits during the celebratory performance at the BBMAs, including Honey, Heartbreaker and Emotions. It could also be a big night for Cardi B, who has received a staggering 21 nominations in 18 categories. The Bodak Yellow rapper is up for top artist alongside Drake, Ariana Grande, Post Malone and Travis Scott, as well as top Billboard 200 album. In that category, Cardi will battle against Drake’s Scorpion, Travis Scott’s ASTROWORLD, XXXTentacion’s ? and Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys. Kelly Clarkson will host the Billboard Music Awards 2019, which are set to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on 1 May.
