Man Utd Release Statement As Greek Court Finds Harry Maguire Guilty Of Assault And Attempted Bribery

Manchester United have released a statement following a guilty verdict delivered to Harry Maguire following his late night brawl in Greece last week in which they say the decision will be appealed.

The statement read: ” Manchester United notes the verdict of the Greek court. Harry Maguire pleaded not guilty to all of the misdemeanour charges made against him + he continues to strongly assert his innocence.

“It should be noted that the prosecution confirmed the charges + provided their evidence late on the day before the trial, giving the defence team minimal time to digest them + prepare. A request for the case to be adjourned was subsequently denied.

“On this basis, along with the substantial body of evidence refuting the charges, Harry Maguire’s legal team will now appeal the verdict, to allow a full + fair hearing at a later date.”
Maguire was found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery following a late night brawl in Mykonos last week.

The England defender has been handed a prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days, suspended for three years.

Maguire, who was released from custody over the weekend, was not present at the trial on the nearby island of Syros. Maguire’s older brother Joe had been accused of assault and attempted bribery, with the pair’s friend Christopher Sharman accused of assault and verbal abuse.

All three were found guilty of all charges, with brother Joe and co-accused Sharman receiving 13 month prison sentences, also suspendedfor three years.

The United captain’s defence team claimed that two Albanian men injected Maguire’s sister Daisy with an unknown liquid, which led to her fainting.

It remains to be seen how England manager Gareth Southgate reacts to the news after Maguire was included in his 24-man squad to take on Iceland and Denmark in the UEFA Nations League next month.
