Manchester United’s four-match winning run came to a crashing halt as Real Sociedad won 1-0 at Old Trafford. A controversial penalty handed the Red Devils their first UEFA Europa League loss on home soil in 19 matches.

With only a few chances created in the first half, Imanol Alguacil’s side came out after the break and scored the only goal of the game in the 59th minute.

New signing Brais Méndez stepped up to convert his spot kick after Lisandro Martínez was adjudged to have handled David Silva’s shot inside the area.

It was the fifth meeting between the sides in the last decade, with La Real scoring their first goal against United and getting their third consecutive European adventure off to an impressive start.

Cristiano Ronaldo, making his first Europa League appearance in two decades, had the ball in the net before the interval, but his powerful header was ruled out for offside. The legendary striker had a chance to put his side ahead after the break, but failed to meet Bruno Fernandes’ cross with any conviction – a huge chance wasted by his lofty standards.
