Liverpool are ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham this summer, with the Germans seeking £90m for the England international.
Bellingham was shown around United’s training ground by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2020 and the Red Devils had been confident of landing the then-16-year-old.
However, the teenager opted to join Dortmund instead thanks to the club’s reputation for developing young players and their promise of greater playing time.
His reputation and value has skyrocketed since then, with Bellingham becoming a first-team regular for both club and country.
United have retained their interest in the midfielder but reports claim that Liverpool have frog-leaped their arch rivals in the bid to sign Bellingham.
Jurgen Klopp is keen to strengthen his midfield as the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita could leave Anfield at the end of the season.
United are similarly keen to do so, with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic likely to depart.
Dortmund are said to be demanding £90m for Bellingham, which would be three times the amount they paid in 2020.
That figure would smash Liverpool’s transfer record, which stands at £75m for the fee they paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2018.
