Like Serena, Venus Williams Withdraws From 2021 US Open

Serena and Venus Williams
Following her sister’s withdrawal from the 141st edition of tennis’ US Open and the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year, Venus Williams has also said she will be pulling out from the games.

Recall that KOKO TV reported on Wednesday that the world-famous American Serena Williams and 23-times grand slam winner had announced her withdrawal from the New York US Open due to her niggling hamstring problem. Serena had, a couple of months back, retired from the Wimbledon Open after she injured her right leg in a first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The ankle injury and now her hamstring all contributed to reasons why she couldn’t participate at the recently concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Venus also won’t be appearing at the US Open as a result of injury. Venus, who has won the event twice, called the decision “super super disappointing,” but said she was “having some issues with my leg all this summer, and just couldn’t work through it.”

“Not the best news everyone. I am joining @serenawilliams @RafaelNadal and @rogerfederer on the injured list. It’s still going to be a great US Open & many thanks to the @usta for the wild card. I was so looking forward to it, but it was not meant to be this year. I will be back!”, she wrote on Twitter.

This will be the first Grand Slam tournament since the 1997 Australian Open not to feature Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, or Venus Williams in the main singles draw. Dominic Thiem and Naomi Osaka are the men’s and women’s singles defending champions. However, Thiem withdrew from the tournament due to a wrist injury.TRENDING VIDEO OF THE DAY: INEC To Conduct All 2023 Election In 1 Day, How Feasible? Photos Credit: Getty
