The Nigerian Army has again said that Governor Sanwo-Olu was the one who requested the presence of the soldiers to combat the #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday 20th October, 2020, leading to the death of many and has nsince been tagged the Lekki Killings or Lekki Massacre.
Recall that the Nigerian Army had first denied its appearance at the scene, saying the videos recorded from the scene of firing and shootings were photoshopped. In an interview, Governor Sanwo-Olu further noted that he does not have power to order the Nigerian Army as he is only a Governor and not the Head of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Speaking to the Lagos Judicial Panel, Brigadier General Ahmed Ibrahim Taiwo, of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army who testified under oath before the Lagos Judicial Panel on narrated what transpired at the Lekki Tollgate on the said date, revealing that Sanwo-Olu requested the presence of the Army to quell riots in the state. “
The occurrences that took place from October 18 were nothing short of lawlessness and violence. This was what prompted Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to request the intervention of the army,” Taiwo said, a decision he believes was the best.

He noted that Sanwo-Olu, however, did not communicate a change in the onset of a 24-hour curfew. Speaking further, he expressed disappointment that the situation in Lagos had only been reduced to the Lekki killings. “It is a shame that the Lagos crisis has been reduced to what happened at the Lagos Toll Gate. Little mention has been made of the wanton destruction that happened prior to that occurrence,” he said, with ample mention of policemen lynched by mobs in some parts of Lagos. “What is worse is that the families of the Police that were killed will not get closure because of the way their bodies were disposed”, he continued.
