At Least 600 Shops Were Destroyed In Niger State As Fire Engulf Old Bida Market

At least 600 shops were destroyed be fire at the old market in Bida in Niger state last night. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the fire, which destroyed goods and other properties in the market worth millions of naira, started around 8:30 pm. Fire Service men who reportedly arrived the scene of the incident shortly after, could not withstand the wild inferno, as it continually engulfed sections of the market while they made futile efforts to stop it.
The Chairman of Bida Local Government, Alhaji Mohammad Badugu, confirmed that the servicemen could not suppress the raging fire. He said: “We are expecting more fire-fighting vehicles from Minna as our neighbouring local government’s fire-fighting engines are not in good condition.” As at the time of this report, the cause of the fire is yet to be identified.
