KOKOnista Of The Day: Pamela Uba Is Breaking Racism And Bullying Barriers As The First Black Miss Ireland In The Competition’s 74-year History

Pamela Uba has made history after being crowned the first black Miss Ireland.

Pamela Uba is an African Irish scientist and model. She grew up in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo.

Uba was born in 1995 in South Africa. She moved from Johannesburg to Ireland with her family as an asylum seeker when she was 7 years old. Uba spent 10 years in direct provision. She has since raised money for educational support for children in direct provision.Uba played Gaelic football as a centre back. She is a Gaelic Athletic Association fan, supporting her home county of Mayo.

Uba earned her undergraduate degree in medical science in Galway, before graduating with a Master’s degree in clinical chemistry from Trinity College Dublin. She works as a medical scientist at University Hospital Galway.

The impressive 26-year-old is a frontline medical worker with a masters degree.
Her family moved to Ireland from South Africa when she was just 7-years old. Speaking about her historic win, Pamela said:

“It was a surreal experience and I’m so delighted. I couldn’t believe this actually happened.

“I am so happy and the outcome is amazing.”

She also goes on to share what the historic win means for all women of colour. The beauty queen wants all young girls to know that they are beautiful and that their skin colour should never hold them back.

“It means so much to me.I am so grateful I can show girls that colour is not something that holds you back and it doesn’t matter where you come from, the world is your oyster,” said Uba . Uba will represent Ireland at the 70th Miss World pageant in December this year.
