Famed Nigerian author and feminist champion Chimamanda Adichie was in a 2013 magazine interview quoted as criticising the use of hair extensions by African women, saying:
“I am a bit of a fundamentalist when it comes to black women’s hair. Hair is hair – yet also about larger questions: self-acceptance, insecurity and what the world tells you is beautiful. For many black women, the idea of wearing their hair naturally is unbearable.”She noted that African women should be proud of their natural hair instead of sticking to the Western notions of beauty and feeling inferior without hair extensions.
