KOKO Quotes: Actions Drowns Out The Voices Of Words

One of the first wise proverbs we are taught in childhood is “Action speaks louder than words.” We know it by heart so much that it soon starts to lose its meaning. But even till today, it is yet to lose its relevance and truth. We are all designed to hear people’s action louder than we hear their voices. We can be told to go one way but by way of reflex action, we usually follow the action of the commander. When words match action from people giving us instructions, there is unity and harmony. But when there is a discord, stress occurs and we battle over which to obey. Ultimately, man always follow the action. This goes beyond actions and words from people in our lives. Even our own words/actions dynamics follow this law as researchers have proven that one of the biggest causes of depression in a person is when his/her actions don’t match the words he/she speaks. So a child being told not to fight at school but experiences his mother suffering domestic violence is bound to punch one of his classmates soon. A student being taught ethics but watches as her teacher skips classes and asks the students to cover for him is bound to cheat in the exam hall soon. An employee who is urged to be creative but is powerless as his boss berates him for not always sticking to the status quo is bound to have his creativity stifled. Listen to the wise words of 19th century poet Ralph Waldo Emerson who said:
