The Kano State Consumer Protection Council has closed down the Wellcare Supermarket after the management refused to accept old naira notes from customers.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje ordered the closure of the store, as confirmed by the acting Chairman of the council, Baffa Danagundi; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Kano state Governor on Social Media, Abubakar Ibrahim.

The Kano state governor, a supporter of a “professional implementation” of the naira redesign policy, had held discussions with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); bank managers, security heads, and traditional leaders to find ways to alleviate the difficulties faced by the public.

Remember, the CBN had stated February 10 as the deadline for the cancelation of the old notes. The move was however countered in a lawsuit taken to the supreme court by five state governors including Kano state. The case which was presided upon last week had the supreme court granting a temporary injunction to forbid the CBN from going further with its decision. The case was however adjourned till February 15.

This news seems to have temporarily quell the pandemonium that follows the cancelation of the new naira note as very few people have access to the new naira notes.
