Kidnapped NNPC Workers Allegedly Dead Despite Reports Of Rescue By Military

Despite claims by a Nigerian military spokesman that all the NNPC staff abducted in the Tuesday’s ambush had been rescued, reports are emanating that no less than 12 soldiers have been reportedly killed while at least four out of 12 staff of the University of Maiduguri, who were part of the NNPC exploration team, equally lost their lives.The exploration team comprised Unimaid staff who were recruited by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, members of Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, and military personnel. The names of the deceased are: Dr Milicus Joseph from Geology Dept, Idris Abubakar Njodi and Dr Daniel Birma of Dept of Soil Science.On Tuesday, July 25, 2017, the victims were abducted near a village called Jibi in Gubio local government area while moving alongside some personnel of the Civilian-JTF. Authorities at the university are yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Governor Shettima of Borno, who was in London alongside other state governors to see ailing President Muhammadu Buhari when the ambush took place on Tuesday, lamented the attack.Photo Credit: Getty
