Jordan Tower 22 Drone Attack: Iran Denies Involvement As Three US Troops Killed

Iran has denied any direct connection to a drone attack on a US base in Jordan that killed three American troops and injured dozens more, but it appeared to confirm the strike was carried out by militias loyal to it.

“Iran had no connection and had nothing to do with the attack on the US base,” a statement attributed to the Iran mission to the United Nations said. “There is a conflict between US forces and resistance groups in the region, which reciprocate retaliatory attacks.”

“Resistance forces” is recognised as an Iranian code phrase for the network of militias it supports across the Middle East, who are dedicated to the destruction of Israel and to ending the US military presence in the region.

The deaths of the American military personnel in the strike on Sunday are the first to have happened since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

President Biden promised reprisals over the attack, which he said was orchestrated by groups operating in Syria and Iraq.

“We will carry on their [service members’] commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt — we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing,” the president said in a statement.

Hamas said the incident demonstrated that Washington’s support for Israel put it at odds with the entire Muslim world and threatened a “regional explosion”.
