#JimiTheHero: Nigerian Man, Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, Died Trying To Rescue Woman Who Fell From London Bridge

A man who died after jumping in the River Thames to save a woman who fell from London Bridge has been named on social media as Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole.

The young man, also known as Jimmy or Jimi, dived into the water around midnight on April 24. Another man also jumped in to rescue the woman before emergency services were called to help all three.

Coastguard and police marine units rescued the woman and the other man. Jimmy’s body was recovered at 6am. Tributes have poured in online, where Jimmy was described as a “pure hearted soul”, “a great helper” and a “loving boy.”

One friend tweeted: “One of the kindest people I’ve ever met, RIP Jimmy.” He was called a “charismatic young man” and a “clean-hearted kid”. It has been reported that Jimmy attended Harris Academy Peckham.

One person who knew him tweeted: “Heard a kid I used to coach was the young man who died trying to save a woman who fell into the Thames over the weekend. Was always good vibes having you around. RIP Jimmy A.”

Another said: “Rip Jimmy, this one hurts deep – all u wanted was to be a hero, U died one. Love u forever bro, I’m spun.” A friend tweeted: “I was literally with you 2 days ago I’m so shocked right now, may God provide for you and your family.”

Another said: “Still in shock and still confused, how is it possible that you didn’t survive? you were selfless as always and will be remembered for that! RIP MY BROTHER, rest in the most perfect peace.” Many others have shared their condolences using the hashtag #JimiTheHero.

A City of London Police spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.12am on Saturday, April 24 to reports of a woman in the River Thames close to London Bridge. Two men, who had witnessed the woman fall from the bridge, entered the river to try and save her. The Coastguard and Metropolitan Police Marine Units were able to rescue the woman and one of the men.

“Sadly, following an extensive search involving police helicopters, marine units, LFB, LAS and City Police officers, the missing man was not located. At 6am the same morning, a body was found believed to be that of the missing man. His next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by officers from the City of London Police.”
